ROCKFORD, July 28 — The groundwork is literally underway at Chicago Rockford International Airport for the new $40 million AAR Corp. jet maintenance facility. Just next door, Rock Valley College‘s new aviation maintenance training facility is nearing completion, to be ready for classes in September. The airport’s Jeff Polsean offered a construction update during a media tour today. The 201,000-square-foot AAR site is being prepared for concrete next month by compacting the soil to handle the large loads required for big jets at the future MRO site in two 100-foot hangars, which are expected to be erected in September. The 24/7 facility is expected to bring 500 jobs when it opens in 2016. RVC’s $5 million state-of-the-art Aviation Maintenance Educational Facility will house both a two-year, FAA-approved degree program and an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) mechanic certification program.
