RFD Receives $10 Million

The Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD), the Midwest’s hub for e-commerce air freight, has been granted $10 million for infrastructure improvements by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The airport will use the money for additional apron construction to accommodate the airport’s ever-increasing air cargo activity.

RFD was named the world’s fastest-growing cargo airport in 2018.  In 2019 the airport recorded 2.3 billion pounds of cargo handled, an increase of 11% from 2018.  The airport is home to UPS’s second-largest air cargo sorting center in the USA and serves as a major hub for Amazon’s Prime Air logistics network.

Cargo has expanded more than 20% since 2019 due to the expanded presence of UPS and Amazon.

Earlier this year Amazon’s Prime Air took over the operations of Pinnacle Logistics, increasing their presence at RFD. The airport has spent $12 million to expand the 72,000-square-foot facility to 200,000 square feet to accommodate Amazon’s Prime Air cargo needs.

UPS has invested $15 million to retrofit its airfreight hub at RFD to keep pace with growing demand for e-commerce deliveries.

The continued investment in infrastructure at the Chicago Rockford International Airport and surrounding roadways demonstrates why our region is seriously Your Opportunity Region.
