ROCKFORD, Dec 15 – The City of Rockford Department of Human Services announced it is the first city to achieve the goals set by First Lady Michelle Obama through the Zero: 2016 Mayor’s Challenge; finding veterans a place to live and end chronic homelessness. Rockford has found housing for 73 veterans so far.
The Mayors Challenge, announced on June 4, 2014 has been taken up by 859 community leaders including Mayors, Governors and county & city officials across the country.
The goal of the program is to have a “functional zero” homeless rate, which means veterans are housed within 30 days of becoming homeless and the city has no more than eight veterans waiting to be housed.
