ROCKFORD, Jan. 23 — A 6-week ACT Prep Course, sponsored by First Midwest Group, Inc., has been growing exponentially since it was first offered in 2013. This year, the course enrolled 497 juniors coming from all five public high schools. That is 369 more students than enrolled two years ago. Students who took four or more prep classes increased their ACT scores by an average of 3.6 points. Sunil Puri, First Midwest Group President, is thrilled that more students are taking advantage of the course. “This is how far the young people of this community have come in wanting to improve their lives.” The course is open to all Rockford Public Schools high school juniors. There is a $20 deposit that they receive back once completing four of the six courses. In addition to their deposit, the students receive $30 from First Midwest Group as an incentive to complete the course. First Midwest Group’s sponsorship totals approximately $50,000, which includes the $30 incentive, ACT prep books, lunch from Famous Dave’s BBQ for each class, cash prizes for top-achieving students, an evening at Volcano Falls for the top achieving school and awarding the ACT All-Star traveling trophy to the RPS high school with the greatest ACT Prep Course success. New this year will be speakers at each Saturday course. Speakers will be prominent leaders in the Rockford Region such as Dr. Robert Head from Rockford University, Mayor Larry Morrissey and Puri.
