ROCKFORD, Jan. 18 — “Let’s quit pooh-poohing call centers and the 2,600 jobs they provide in Winnebago and Boone counties” began Georgette Braun’s column on why call centers have helped the Rockford unemployment rate.
After learning about Servicom’s projected even greater job growth this month, the Rockford Register Star sought data from the RAEDC on that segment’s employment: 13 call centers in Winnebago and Boone counties provide 2,600 jobs in the Rockford Region, twice the number from a decade ago.
Braun’s column points out how these jobs are valuable for a large segment of our community.
Mark Podemski, vice president of development at the Rockford Area Economic Development Council, was quoted to underline that point: “Everybody needs employment, and not everybody is going to be an engineer. Employment is honorable.”
