High school students to compete for NIU scholarships on new televised quiz bowl

ROCKFORD – A key component of the Transform Rockford movement is a greater emphasis on providing quality education to improve workforce readiness and provide better opportunities for our young citizens. In that spirit, WTVO-TV Channel 17 & WQRF Fox 39 announced the Stateline Quiz Bowl by Bergstrom, a new half-hour local television series that will air exclusively on WTVO-TV/WQRF-TV beginning Jan. 17, 2015.

The Stateline Quiz Bowl by Bergstrom is a 21-week, tournament-style educational contest program. Announced Dec. 8, it will feature students from 22 local high schools in a test of their knowledge and give them a chance to win valuable scholarships from Northern Illinois University.

WTVO-TV/WQRF-TV created the Stateline Quiz Bowl by Bergstrom academic contest to increase awareness of the importance of education in Northern Illinois and to highlight, challenge and reward the community’s best and brightest.

Bergstrom Inc., a Rockford-based global company and leading designer/manufacturer of cab climate systems for commercial trucks, off-highway machines, military and other specialty vehicles, has signed on as the title sponsor of Stateline Quiz Bowl by Bergstrom.

“WTVO-TV Channel17 & WQRF Fox 39 are deeply committed to improving our local community,” said Kelly Lattimer, VP and General Manager of WTVO / WQRF. “Stateline Quiz Bowl by Bergstrom is one way we can honor and showcase the academic achievements of the next generation of leaders needed to transform our community. The Stateline Quiz Bowl by Bergstrom program is a perfect extension of our Stateline Volunteers and Excellence in Education community-focused initiatives.”

Lattimer also noted that this academically-focused program would not be possible without the contributions of Stateline Quiz Bowl by Bergstrom partners Bergstrom Inc. and NIU, both of which see the program as furthering their commitment to improving education in the Stateline area.

Stateline Quiz Bowl by Bergstrom premieres the week of January 12, 2015, and will air three times per week:
WTVO: Saturdays @ 6:30pm; WQRF: Sundays @ 9:30pm; MyNetworkTV: Sundays @ 8:30am.
