Guest column: Manufacturing’s ‘moon shot’ will be a boon for Rockford Region

Jacob Goodwin

Jacob Goodwin, the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute‘s director of member engagement and communication, wrote a guest column in the Sunday, Nov. 9, Rockford Register Star to explain the audacious goal of the new institute, commonly known as DMDII, and even harder to explain precisely how Illinois manufacturers will fit into the grand plan..

“In short, DMDII is going to help revolutionize American manufacturing by organizing and funding research efforts aimed at making communications between players at every stage of the process more efficient.”

Caralynn NowinskiDr. Caralynn Nowinski, executive director of UI LABS, which is leading the DMDII effort, knows this public/private partnership of more than 500 — including small- and mid-sized manufacturers — knows this is “our moon shot,” as one of the participants once characterized it.

When Nowinski speaks Nov. 19 at the Rockford Area Economic Development Council’s annual meeting, she will explain how the Rockford Region can plug into this effort. But she won’t just be talking. She and her staff have mapped out two busy days afterward to tour local businesses and forge critical connections.
